This is a cold hardiness and general performance report for cultivars that we grow or have grown.

Acer palmatum cultivars:

  • Atropurpureum (A. palm. 'Atropurpureum')
Outstanding, little to no dieback to report.

  • 'Bloodgood' (A. palm. 'Bloodgood')
Outstanding, one of our best performers.

  • 'Burgundy Lace' (A. palm. 'Burgundy Lace')
Performed well in the past. We have since sold all of ours.

  • 'Crimson Queen' (A. palm. dissectum 'Crimson Queen')
Performs well, some dieback will occur over harsh winters. Beware of poor branch angling because heavy snow loads may crack large branches.

  • 'Fireglow' (A. palm. 'Fireglow')
Performs very well, no major dieback to report.

  • 'Garnet' (A. palm. dissectum 'Garnet')
Performs well, no dieback to report.

  • 'Green Filigree' (A. palm. 'Green Filigree')
Hardy with no dieback, but extremely slow growing. Further observation needs to be done as to their performance.

  • 'Hagoromo' (A. palm. dissectum 'Hagoromo')
Ours may actually be 'Koshimino', this is still up for debate. We have one tree and it performs very poorly. Every year it experiences a lot of dieback, but maybe with increased protection, it would perform better.

Performs very well, no dieback to report.

  • 'Linearilobum' (A. palm. 'Linearilobum')

  • 'Moonfire' (A. palm. 'Moonfire')
Performs very well. Also holds its color throughout the summer, even with very hot and dry conditions.

  • 'Okushimo' (A. palm. 'Okushimo')
Not recommended for our zone; survives mild winters, but harsh winters have killed all but one of our trees in the field.

  • 'Omato' (A. palm. var. heptalobum 'Omato')
Performs very well, no dieback to report.

  • 'Orido Nishiki' (A. palm. 'Orido Nishiki')
Performs fine. Some dieback occurs every year. Maybe with increased protection it would perfrom better.

Performs very well, no major dieback to report..
